Amazon founder Bezos 'approached' as FSG enter talks over Liverpool investment

A consortium in talks to buy a stake in Liverpool have reportedly approached Jeff Bezos. Amazon's founder and executive chairman is the fourth-richest man in the world, with a net worth of over £190billion.

Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group, confirmed on Tuesday that a consortium led by Amit Bhatia expressed interest in investing in the Premier League club. Bhatia was previously a co-owner and director of Queens Park Rangers.

FSG said in a statement to our sister title the Liverpool ECHO: "An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."

Sky News reports that Bezos has spoken about joining Bhatia's syndicate. However, they cite a source when claiming the billionaire is not certain to invest.

The consortium is understood to have already the backing of Lakshmi Mittal, Bhatia's father-in-law. He is worth over £20bn and led a £1bn-plus takeover of the Indian Premier League's Rajasthan Royals cricket team in May.

However, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, no investment deal is in place with Liverpool yet, with discussions over a "significant minority stake" only at a preliminary stage. FSG struck an £82m - £164m deal with Dynasty Equity in 2023.

Bezos has previously been credited with an interest in buying an NFL franchise. He was said to be keen on the Washington Commanders three years ago and links to Super Bowl champions the Seattle Seahawks emerged earlier this year.

However, investing in a Premier League club would be considerably cheaper than the £4.5bn it cost to buy the Commanders. The Dynasty Equity deal valued Liverpool at around that amount, but Bhatia's group is said to be looking only to purchase a 30 per cent stake.

Bezos's Amazon have shown an increasing interest in football over recent years. That began by broadcasting Premier League matches.

Prime Video now have the first pick for Champions League matches on Tuesday night's for until 2031. World Cup qualifiers now featuring national teams from the United Kingdom are also shown, albeit on pay-per-view.

They also have the 'All or Nothing' sports documentary series. Amazon have previously worked with Arsenal and Manchester City, with Manchester United next up this coming season.
