English refereeing body admits 'error of judgement' on Haaland's derby winner

Pro Ref, the English refereeing body, said in a statement that Erling Haaland’s winner in Sunday’s Manchester derby should not have stood. Manchester City beat Manchester United 1-0 earlier that afternoon.

The striker’s finish was initially ruled out for offside, before VAR overturned the on-field decision and the referee awarded the goal.

Haaland was onside, but the focus was Enzo Fernandez, who tried to head the ball from an offside position and should have been penalised. Although he did not make contact, the probable impact of his position was not considered and an on-field review should have been recommended.

Manchester United were contacted to acknowledge what is considered an error of judgement.

The incident will now be subject to further review.
