The Manchester derby is almost upon us and Manchester United fans will be hoping their team can kick-start their Premier League season with a statement win on Sunday.
It almost feels like last season, with the Red Devils struggling for any real consistency while their noisy neighbours continue to look imperious.
It was Michael Carrick‘s first game in charge, and what a performance it was from the 20-time English league champions.
They tore City apart, who were lucky the game ended only 2-0 in United’s favour. One of the chief architects of that win was Kobbie Mainoo.

After a tumultuous period under Ruben Amorim, the Carrington graduate finally got to showcase his skills under Carrick and he put in a virtuoso display.
The United midfielder went through yet another difficult period under Thomas Tuchel during the World Cup, and he could exorcise those ghosts with another top-class display at Old Trafford.
Kobbie Mainoo spoke to MUTV about last season’s derby, while lavishing praise on his new head coach and the impact he has had on his game.
“It definitely got the ball rolling for us, and was a big booster in building momentum, going to Arsenal after that and winning again. So, it was definitely a big part of the season.

“I’ve loved working under Carrick. So much help, especially him being such an experienced midfielder and winning so much with this club.
“Anything that he tells you or any instruction that he gives you is gold, really. So it’s been good to learn under him and play for him.”
The Englishman knows the importance of a derby win, and how it can serve as a catalyst for the whole team and the season ahead.
“Any time you beat City it’s positive and it’s big for the season, like it helps boost the team, so we’re not going to take that lightly, and we know it’s a big one. Hopefully we come out winners.”
United fans around the globe will be hoping for the same come Sunday.
