Manchester United fans issue Patrick Dorgu left-back verdict after Champions League win

The £25m signing impressed in the Champions League win over Sabah

Manchester United supporters were saying the same thing about Patrick Dorgu after the 4-0 win over Sabah.

Dorgu made his first start for Man United since the opening weekend of the season - when he was hauled off at half-time in the loss to Hull City - benefitting from the absence of Luke Shaw.

Since arriving in from Leece for £25million in the 2025 winter transfer window, Dorgu has largely operated as a wing-back and, particularly under Michael Carrick, as a left winger.

However, with Shaw rested ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby, Dorgu started at left-back as Man Utd enjoyed the perfect return to the Champions League after two seasons away.

The Denmark international had a hand in the goal that broke the deadlock in the 27th minute on Thursday night with his cross being turned home by Matheus Cunha from close range.

Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko and Lisandro Martinez completed the scoring, but Dorgu’s performance at left-back has been a major talking point among some United fans on social media.

It’s well documented that Michael Carrick was after a left-back during the summer transfer window, though supporters are now suggesting Ruben Amorim’s signing could be the answer moving forward.

Dorgu was named the Player of the Match for United’s win over Sabah as the UEFA Technical Observer Group said: "He broke forward very effectively on the counterattack to link up with Matheus Cunha.”

Speaking, alongside Dorgu, to TNT Sports after the game, Sesko said: “I think it was perfect for everyone – especially for our fans. It means a lot to them when they see so many goals, and it was great for us in general, to give us more motivation for the upcoming games.

“I saw the goalkeeper rushing out, and it was a great opportunity to take the ball away from him to make the goal a little bit easier. Of course, I'm happy with my goal."
