Mateus Fernandes shows Man Utd what they're missing with screamer on Spurs debut

Mateus Fernandes has enjoyed a blockbuster start to his Tottenham career with a stunning goal on his debut. The Portuguese midfielder completed a move to North London last month in an £85million switch from relegated West Ham.

Fernandes, 22, was also linked with a switch to Manchester United but the Red Devils were unwilling to pay the amount that the Hammers demanded for his services.

Instead, they have paid a combined £85m for Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos from Aston Villa and Chelsea respectively. And while United will reflect positively on their own business, they might have some slight regret if Fernandes’ pre-season strike for Spurs is anything to go by.

Roberto De Zerbi ’s side took on MK Dons in their pre-season opener on Wednesday, with Fernandes lashing home a stunning volley from outside of the box.

Speaking about his goal, the midfielder said: “It was great, no? The second I did the goal, I thought no I can’t shoot again because if I miss, they will say I am lucky.

“It’s given me confidence for the next game, for the next days. The most important thing is to play well, control the game. In the last minutes, I was so tired so I need to improve this as well but it’s very important for me to play well.

“It was my favourite goal of my career. It was fantastic. It is number one by a mile, the second one was last season. I need to do this more times, to score a goal and shoot outside of the box. I know I can do it so this gives me confidence for the days ahead.”

On how preparations for the 2026/27 season were going, Fernandes added: “The weather in England it’s so good, not too tough. I think it’s important for me to speak with the manager and with the guys. Everyone is incredible.

“I’m very happy to be here. I know I’m playing for a massive club. We are playing for the top of the Premier League and the levels need to be big. We need to train hard to arrive in the games and compete with the opponents.”

Asked what he wants to achieve during his time with Spurs, Fernandes said: “As an individual, I want to do better than last season. I know I need to score more goals like today, get more assists. Be more constant on my game.

“Playing for Tottenham, maybe that pressure can be even more. I need to be better in many aspects and this is the reason I am here. I know Mr De Zerbi will improve me and the team and now it’s just us against the world.”
