Morgan Rogers

after Chelsea agreed a £117 million deal with Aston Villa for the 23-year-old England winger, with Fabrizio Romano confirming the transfer with his trademark ‘Here we go!’ on Friday.

The Athletic journalist David Ornstein reported that Chelsea had reached a verbal agreement with Villa over the fee, with Romano subsequently confirming that Rogers has signed personal terms with the Blues until June 2032. The deal was struck before Arsenal – widely considered frontrunners – had even submitted a formal offer.

Rogers had been on United’s radar heading into this summer window, with Michael Carrick understood to have been keen on a reunion with the player he managed at Middlesbrough.

Sporting director Jason Wilcox also held a personal connection to Rogers from their time together in Manchester City’s academy

, and INEOS viewed him as a long-term successor to Bruno Fernandes with the versatility to complement the Portugal captain before any changing of the guard.

Alas, Villa’s valuation – in excess of £100 million – was prohibitive given United’s focus on a midfield overhaul, with a new forward considered a secondary priority.

United’s interest was genuine but the budget arithmetic never aligned

Rogers finished the 2025/26 season as one of the Premier League’s most dangerous attacking players. Operating across both flanks and as a ten at Villa Park, the 6’2″ Halesowen native contributed 14 goals and 12 assists across 55 appearances in all competitions.

Romano also noted that Xabi Alonso was instrumental in convincing Rogers to choose Stamford Bridge over the Emirates. With his World Cup involvement with England set to conclude in tonight’s third-place playoff against France, Rogers will travel to west London on Monday for his medical.

There is a particular sting in the detail for United. The £50 million deal the club agreed to sell Andrey Santos to Chelsea this summer effectively helped fund the Blues’ pursuit of Rogers – a record British transfer that United could not match. The British transfer record has now been broken twice this summer, first by Manchester City for Elliot Anderson, then again by Chelsea here, with the Reds absent from both races.

Carrick’s side will now need to identify an alternative left-sided or creative forward option in what is already a depleted domestic market, with Chelsea and City having absorbed the two most coveted homegrown attacking talents of the window.
