The race for the 2026
FIFA
World Cup
Golden Boot has been one for the ages this summer.
It’s been a summer where the big names have shone, and the Golden Boot is firmly up for grabs with just two games to go.
France face England in the third/fourth play-off this evening, with several stars from both sides still in the mix for the prize.
Kylian Mbappe is the joint-leading scorer at the
heading into the final fixtures, and is aiming to become the first player ever to win multiple Golden Boots at the tournament. Mbappe scored eight goals in Qatar in 2022.
Harry Kane could also achieve that feat, though would need a huge performance against France – if selected. The England captain has six goals, level with teammate Jude Bellingham.
On Sunday, Spain and Argentina will contest the
final in New Jersey.
Lionel Messi
leads the Golden Boot race alongside Mbappe, scoring eight times to better his total from four years ago.
The 39-year-old’s incredible tournament has seen him shatter several records, including becoming the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer.
Messi could become only the second footballer in history to win the Golden Ball, Golden Boot and
in the same tournament, after Paulo Rossi in 1982.
Six of the seven top scorers at this summer’s tournament still have one game to play.
* Eliminated from the tournament and has no further games
